The Border Violence Monitoring Network just published it’s November report, covering pushbacks and police violence from Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Greece. This report covers several different trends, analysing the illegal and life threatening police practices which govern the external border of the European Union. In focus was the near fatal use of firearms by Croatian authorities, supported by the recent publication of BVMN’s wider statistics on the exercise of guns during collective expulsion.

There is also supporting analysis of:

      • Pushbacks initiated from Italy
      • Further violations from Bajakovo BCP
      • Cross border incursions by Croatian police
      • Pushbacks from Evros, Greece into Turkey
      • Criminilisation of shooting victims

The November publication also follows re-admissions from Slovenia, heightened transit into Bosnia-Herzegovina, updates on the situation in Una Sana Canton and squat evictions occurring in western Serbia. In summary, the information collated by BVMN in the field, combined with developments in the region, paints a disturbing picture of EU border practice on the West Balkan Route in the early winter months of 2019.
