In 2023, Greece continued to display concerning challenges to media freedom and journalist safety, exemplified by its low ranking in the World Press Freedom Index and the prevalence of SLAPP suits against investigative reporters. Concerns were raised over the ratification of a new media law and its broad interpretation of “fake news,” suggesting potential government intrusion into media affairs. Moreover, civil society organisations, particularly those focusing on human rights and migration, faced hurdles such as cumbersome registration processes and instances of harassment and criminalization, despite recommendations for improvement. These issues underscored ongoing threats to freedom of expression and the effective operation of civil society in Greece.
