The respondent, a 20 year old man from Sudan, was standing in a parking lot near some train tracks in Calais, France, with his friend, a 21 year old man also from Sudan, around 10pm on the 15th of January 2024.

A security guard with a large dog spotted the respondent, and walked over to him whilst yelling at him in French. The respondent recalled that the guard did not see his friend. The respondent reported that the security guard hit him over the head with his torch, causing a cut large enough to draw a substantial amount of blood. The guard then released the dog, who aggressively bit the respondent on the leg, once again drawing blood.

The seriousness of the wounds inflicted upon the respondent can be seen in the images he provided. The respondent reported that he was sitting/lying on the floor unable to walk for some time. The respondent recalled that the security guard then called the police, which was communicated to the respondent. Shortly after the call, 7 uniformed police officers arrived at the carpark.

When the respondent asked the police to take him to the hospital, the officers refused. The respondent reported that the officers told him they would instead call ‘immigration’. The respondent reported that the officers then left the car park, during which the respondent assumed they were heading back to their vehicle to make the call, which was out of the respondent's eyesight. However, the respondent recalled being surprised that the officers never returned to the carpark. The respondent reported that after some time, he felt strong enough to walk back to his living site, reporting that neither the officers nor the security guard were present.
