On November 27th, Border Violence Monitoring Network, ASGI and Europe Other hosted a webinar on Albania as a site of EU externalisation of border management. With “return hubs” opening and the first transfers of people from Italy to Albania in October 2024, the Rama-Meloni Deal has officially come into force. Albania is in the spotlight and discussions have opened about whether this inhumane practice of so-called “return hubs” should be reproduced elsewhere. In this webinar, the speakers discussed the real impact of the Italy-Albania deal, return hubs, and externalisation on those directly affected by it and highlighted the dangers of inaccurate reporting. The webinar also touched on te relationship between the EU and Albania and the role of Albania in EU externalisation efforts. This webinar summary is available in English, Turkish, Farsi, Italian, Albanian and Arabic.
